The story of Ágnes and Kosbor Panzió

Ágnes Molnár-Mersitz's story is not the usual tale of someone starting afresh in the countryside. Although she ran a successful food business in Budapest, city life had begun to weigh on her. For years she was caught up in the fast-paced world of the cheese trade, taking risks every day as exchange rates rose and fell. As time went by, she felt she was drifting further and further from herself and from the simple, natural things in life. Instead of the constant rush, she longed for a quieter, calmer life.

The Őrség was not part of her plans at first, but on a chance outing she suddenly found herself standing in front of an abandoned, crumbling house. The property was practically crying out for renovation, yet Ágnes saw its potential straight away. The apple trees blossoming in the garden, the humming bees, the heavenly peace of the countryside and the wild flowers growing in every corner of the house enchanted her at once. “It was love at first sight,” she still says whenever she thinks back to that moment.

The house, however, did not give in easily. In the end the original building had to be demolished, but Ágnes was determined to preserve the spirit of the place and to rebuild it in the authentic style of the Őrség. Construction took three years and involved a great deal of struggle. “Every decision during the project was made with sustainability in mind – the eco-friendly insulation, the energy-saving systems and the use of recycled materials all reflect our respect for nature.”

The Kosbor Panzió team

Yet Kosbor Panzió is not Ágnes's work alone. Its success depends on the team who work every day to make guests feel at home. The housekeepers, the cooks, the receptionists and the staff behind the scenes all help the four-star Kosbor maintain its consistently high standards. “I wouldn't be here without them,” says Ágnes, for whom the team has become a true family over the years.

When she opened Kosbor Panzió in 2010, the first years were quieter than she had expected. "At first I thought word of mouth would bring in enough guests, but I soon realised that in the world of online marketing it would take much more." Ágnes followed and learnt every new trend. Facebook ads, booking portals – she used every tool available to make the Kosbor name known.

Today Kosbor Panzió is one of the defining places to stay in the Őrség, where not only people but dogs, too, are warmly welcomed. Ágnes herself is the owner of three rescue dogs, so it was only natural for her that Kosbor's doors should be open to four-legged guests as well.

On the breakfast table, fragrant homemade jams, mature cheeses and freshly sliced artisan hams await guests, offering a taste of the Őrség's rich flavours. In the rooms, embroidered damask bed linen welcomes new arrivals. Kosbor is a dream come true: a world Ágnes has created heart and soul, where guests become part of the story too. Behind the business there is always personal passion. “If I ever thought we could sit back because things are fine as they are, that would be the time to stop. From then on there would be no excitement left in it” – she says, and to this day she works on new ideas every single day so that the story of Kosbor Panzió can continue.
