Summer in the Őrség – when the silence cools, nature soothes, and the choice is a conscious one.
Summer is a celebration of life. The scent of flowers, long evenings, chirping crickets, the dewy, misty meadow at dawn. In recent years, however, hotter summers have raised new questions in everyday life and in hospitality alike. At Kosbor, in the heart of the Őrség National Park, we have decided that air conditioning is not the answer. We believe in naturally cool air. In sustainability. And in the idea that real rest is not just a question of temperature – but of outlook.
Not a compromise – a conscious decision
Air conditioning is now almost a basic expectation in tourism. Icy air circulating in closed rooms may feel pleasant, but we rarely stop to think about its impact on the environment and on us. We said no to air conditioning for three reasons:
1. Environmental impact
Air conditioners use huge amounts of energy, while their outdoor units release heat – exactly where we are looking for relief.
2. Health risks
A direct stream of cold air can cause colds, sore throats, ear problems and sinusitis, especially in more sensitive guests. The air-conditioning systems of large buildings can be particularly hazardous – you may have heard of Legionella infections…
3. A lost experience
What drifts in through the open window at night here: the crickets' song, the rustle of the wind, the evening stirrings of birds, soft music from the terrace. In a sealed hotel room, you would hear the hum of the air conditioner instead.
What do we offer instead of air conditioning?
At Kosbor, we have chosen a different way to keep summer stays cool – one that is kind to both people and nature.
Walls that keep you cool – the building itself helps
The Kosbor building does more than offer peace inside – its thick walls, double-thickness insulation and insulated windows and doors protect against the heat. The mass and orientation of the building naturally slow down warming, so the rooms stay cooler even on the hottest days. Here it is not only machines but the built environment itself that serves your rest – quietly and unnoticed.
Heat-recovery ventilation
Every room has a system circulating fresh, pre-cooled air, so you can enjoy fresh air all day without having to open a window.
Heat-protection film and blinds on the windows
New for summer 2025: every window is protected by a special film against excessive solar heating, and the blinds fitted to the windows add further protection from the blazing sun.
Fans for natural air flow
Gentle, quiet air movement – the fans refresh and cool without drying out the air.
Cool nights
The Őrség climate is reminiscent of the Alpine foothills – so in the evenings you really can open the window and let in the rhythm of nature and the cool night air.
Rest is a matter not only of the body, but of the soul
At Kosbor, it is not only the rooms that are cool, but the whole experience: slow, sensual, natural. Birdsong drifting in through the open window, the hooting of an owl or the evening silence all contribute to deep, restorative sleep. These sounds are not disturbing – quite the opposite: they help you switch off, arrive and let go.
Sustainability in everyday life, too
For us, environmental awareness is not marketing – it is simply how we work:
– we buy from local producers
– we compost and separate our waste
– we collect rainwater and use it for watering the garden and flushing the toilets
– our water is heated by the sun
Why stay at Kosbor in summer?
Because here the cool air is not artificial but a feature of the landscape, silence is not an absence but a presence, and attentiveness is not a service – it comes naturally.
Here, a summer break takes on new meaning. And perhaps, for a moment, you too will believe that life can be lived differently.
